The way a permaculture consultant ‘reads’ the farm terrain is to see its full productive potential. The consultant assesses water flow across the farm and how to slow it down; the natural location for ponds; quality of the soil and how to enrich it continually.

The mutual arrangement of the farm design elements (a pond, plant beds, an orchard, a chicken coop, a fence) must be optimal from the viewpoint of inter-dependencies, mutual benefits and minimisation of labour, all of them fitted into the designated farm area.
